Who can take an NO-boosting regimen?

By  • July 30, 2013 •
couple-bike 1Supplements that cause increased nitric oxide production have three main ingredients: L-arginine, L-citrulline and antioxidants. These nutrients are found in many food products and are frequently consumed by simply eating a balanced diet. Typically, taking these nutrients in supplement form is safe for most adults, young and old. Children generally produce plenty of nitric oxide naturally without supplementation, and it usually isn’t advised to give NO-boosting supplements to children.

But, what if you’re taking medications? NO-boosting supplements are safe to take with almost all prescription or over-the-counter medicines. The big exception to this rule is blood pressure-lowering medications like statins. Because elevated nitric oxide levels cause lowered blood pressure, when taken along with a blood pressure-lowering medication, there is a risk of the development of hypotension. Hypotension is when blood pressure falls too low—the opposite of hypertension. If you’re taking prescription medications, consult with your physician before starting or stopping any nutritional regimen, including NO boosters.

Increasing NO production can also improve endurance and increase anaerobic threshold, which is a huge benefit to athletes. Not surprisingly, lots of athletes are increasingly turning to NO-boosting supplements. NO-supportive supplements for athletic performance are often higher potency than supplements designed to maintain cardiovascular health. For this reason, NO supplements designed for athletes should be taken with more caution

So, who can take an NO-boosting regimen? Almost any adult, with the exceptions above. But it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before adding any supplement to your daily regimen.
